The Child Trust Fund
Administered by an approved financial institution (Child Trust Fund provider) of your choosing, the Child Trust Fund is essentially a tax-free long term savings and investment account. Use our comprehensive list of Child Trust Fund providers to view their current offers.
Opening a Child Trust Fund account is easy once you have claimed and are in receipt of Child Benefit (if you have not yet applied for Child Benefit you can download the form here ) as the Child Trust Fund voucher and information booklet is automatically sent by the government.
Children born before 2nd August 2010, claiming Child Benefit by 1st November 2010, will receive a £250 Child Trust Fund voucher. (For children from lower income families the government will pay an additional £250 direct into their Child Trust Fund account.)
Children born between the 2nd August 2010 and 31st December 2010, claiming Child Benefit by 31st March 2011, will receive a £50 Child Trust Fund Voucher (previously £250). (For children from lower income families the government will pay an additional £50 (previously £250) direct into their Child Trust Fund account.)
For children born from January 2011 onwards, no further Child Trust Fund vouchers will be issued by the government.
Once opened, parents, friends and family members can all contribute to your child's Child Trust Fund account via regular, ad-hoc or lump sum payments up to a maximum of £1200 per annum.
For children whose (7th) birthday falls on or after 1st August 2010, they will no longer receive an "Age 7" payment direct into their Child Trust Fund account from the government. (Previously £250 or £500 for families on low income.)
